Te Ao Hurihuri

Toitū te mana, toitū te whenua, toitū te tangata.
Te Ao Hurihuri – The Changing World invites senior ākonga to explore sustainability, social responsibility, and global change through increasingly sophisticated use of te reo Māori.
Designed for senior learners, this unit centres on the interconnectedness of people, whenua, and systems, grounded in the whakataukī “Toitū te mana, toitū te whenua, toitū te tangata.”Through themes such as environmental issues, political decision-making, and collective responsibility, ākonga strengthen their ability to analyse perspectives, express opinions, and develop arguments using purposeful and informed language across a range of contexts.Learning moves beyond discussion into more critical and action-focused kōrerorero, where students evaluate issues, propose solutions, and engage with real-world challenges in meaningful ways.
As fluency develops, ākonga recognise te reo Māori as a language of advocacy and leadership, empowering them to uphold kaitiakitanga, contribute to sustainable futures, and take an active role in shaping their communities and the wider world.
