Tōku Āhuru Mōwai

He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngākau e kore e kitea.
Tōku Āhuru Mōwai – My Place of Comfort invites senior ākonga to explore the meaning of belonging through the lens of place, people, and personal experience. Designed for NCEA Level 1 learners, this unit centres on identity as something shaped by both visible environments and unseen emotional connections, grounded in the whakataukī “He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngākau e kore e kitea.”
Through themes such as home, whānau, relationships, memories, and spaces of comfort, ākonga strengthen their ability to describe people and places, express feelings and opinions, and communicate about past experiences, routines, and connections using meaningful, familiar contexts.
Learning moves beyond basic description into more connected and sustained kōrerorero, where students share, respond, and extend ideas with increasing confidence. As fluency develops, ākonga use te reo Māori to reflect on what makes a place feel like home, recognising that belonging is not only seen, but deeply felt.
