He Kōteo Mau Kupenga

He Kōteo Mau Kupenga – Youth Issues invites senior ākonga to explore the challenges and opportunities facing rangatahi through purposeful and increasingly confident use of te reo Māori. Designed for NCEA Level 2 learners, this unit centres on youth voice, leadership, and wellbeing, grounded in the whakataukī “Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi.”

Through themes such as hauora, social pressures, relationships, and change, ākonga strengthen their ability to discuss issues, express opinions, and propose solutions using flexible and meaningful language across a range of contexts.

Learning moves beyond basic discussion into more critical and responsive kōrerorero, where students offer advice, justify perspectives, and engage with real-world issues in thoughtful ways. As fluency develops, ākonga recognise their role as emerging leaders, drawing on tikanga Māori values to support others, advocate for wellbeing, and contribute positively to their communities.
