Taku Whare Wānanga

Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōnā te ao.

Taku Whare Wānanga – Where Knowledge Lives invites senior ākonga to explore the role of learning in shaping identity, growth, and future pathways. Designed for NCEA Level 1 learners, this unit positions education as both a personal and collective journey, grounded in the whakataukī “Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōnā te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōnā te ao.”

Through themes such as school life, friendships, milestones, and learning experiences, ākonga strengthen their ability to recount past events, describe routines, and express opinions about their learning journey using meaningful and familiar contexts.

Learning moves beyond simple recount into more reflective and purposeful kōrerorero, where students share experiences, respond to others, and express future intentions with increasing confidence. As fluency develops, ākonga recognise that knowledge is a source of empowerment, and that learning spaces thrive when grounded in whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and shared success.
