Tōku Māpihi Maurea

Ko tōku reo, tōku mapihi maurea

Tōku Mapihi Maurea – Our Living Language invites senior ākonga to explore identity, expression, and language revitalisation through increasingly sophisticated use of te reo Māori. Designed for senior learners, this unit centres on reo as a living expression of who we are, grounded in the whakataukī “Ko taku reo taku ohooho, ko taku reo taku mapihi maurea.”

Through themes such as identity, language use, revitalisation, and contemporary contexts, ākonga strengthen their ability to express viewpoints, respond to others, and communicate ideas with clarity and purpose across a range of settings.Learning moves beyond everyday communication into more reflective and strategic kōrerorero, where students develop arguments, analyse perspectives, and use language to inform, persuade, and inspire.

As fluency develops, ākonga recognise te reo Māori as a source of identity and empowerment, strengthening their confidence to use the language with pride while contributing to its ongoing vitality.
