Introduction to te reo Māori for Teachers - Level 1

​This reo Māori course is developed by teachers for teachers who want to begin incorporating te reo Māori into the classroom in an engaging, interactive and fun way!

Participants will learn the basics of te reo Māori as well as an introduction to tikanga (processes) and mātauranga Māori (Māori ways of being).

 

Throughout this course you will be taught the fundamentals of sentence structures and relevant kupu (words) to enhance your learning and apply it to your unique setting.

Each lesson you will receive activities and classroom resources that you can utilize in your classroom to encourage learning amongst you and your students in a collaborative way.

 

Classes are delivered weekly via Zoom and Google Classroom. There is a maximum of 20 students per class to ensure a collaborative and comfortable learning environment.

Ngā Whāinga Paetae: Learning Objectives

A range of topics are covered throughout this course with each week featuring a mix of both te reo Māori structures and components of tikanga and mātauranga Māori (cultural knowledge).

Some of these topics include:

  • The importance of pronunciation

  • Describing sentences

  • Pepeha

  • Pōwhiri

  • Verbal sentences

  • Instructional phrases

 

Each lesson is unique and we use a range of digital tools to accentuate delivery and learning.

 

Lessons are fun and interactive and most of all RELEVANT to educators wanting to experience the beauty that is te reo Māori.​

Course Info & Enrolment

Next classes commence the week of 9th May, 2022 (Week 2, Term 2) - spaces are limited!

 

Delivery mode: Online

When: (Choose one option)

  1. Monday:          3.45 pm - 5.15 pm

  2. Tuesday:          5.00pm - 6.30pm

Length: 9 weeks

 

Cost: $200 per person

Extra Notes:

  • All classes are delivered via Zoom. Experience is not necessary but a basic understanding of computers is advisable

  • You will receive additional "Mahi Kāinga (homework tasks) to complete following each class to reinforce learning. These will take approximately 30 minutes per week. An 80% pass rate is required to complete this course and be awarded a certificate of achievement

  • If you miss a class or are unavailable, class recordings will be made available immediately after the session or you are welcome to join one of the other sessions throughout the week.

  • This is beginners course that starts from the basics of te reo Māori and finishes with basic sentence structures that you can use and also adapt to suit your classes and outside of the school setting as well - functionality is key in this course! 

  • A Level 2 self-directed course is available following the completion of this course.
