Level 2 - Kia hua, kia puāwai!

Kia hua, kia puāwai – Level 2 builds on the foundations of Level 1, helping educators grow their confidence and fluency in te reo Māori while deepening their understanding of tikanga and mātauranga Māori. This intermediate course explores sentence structures, extended vocabulary, and formal language such as pepeha and mihi. Kaiako will learn to integrate local pūrākau, whakataukī, and maramataka into classroom practice. With a focus on regional relevance and cross-curricular design, participants will also develop culturally grounded resources to support reo Māori integration across the school. Ideal for teachers ready to move from use to intentional embedding.

Level 2 - Kia hua, kia puāwai!

Offered each term over 7 weeks, our Level 2 Te Reo Māori for Teachers course builds on foundational skills to deepen your language use and cultural understanding.

This course is designed for educators and support staff ready to expand their vocabulary, explore more complex sentence structures, and integrate reo and tikanga Māori more confidently across classroom and curriculum settings.

More than a language course, it’s a practical and enriching journey into te ao Māori—strengthening cultural competence, deepening connections with ākonga, and empowering you to lead meaningful change in your learning environment.

Course overview

This intermediate-level course builds on foundational skills, enabling teachers to extend their use of te reo Māori and confidently integrate tikanga and mātauranga Māori throughout their teaching practice

1. Language Acquisition and Development

  • Use an expanded vocabulary to describe people, places, emotions, weather, and daily routines.

  • Understand and apply a wider range of sentence types, including verb-based (reremahi), descriptive (rereāhua), locative (rerewāhi), and time-based (rerewā) structures.

  • Construct and deliver a more detailed pepeha that includes tribal, ancestral, and geographic references.

  • Form more complex sentences using connecting words such as i te mea and ahakoa.

  • Analyse and apply whakataukī to support learning themes and deepen cultural connections.

  • Learn and confidently use a formal mihi to open and close classes, hui, or events.

  • Refine pronunciation and master more challenging sounds with increasing confidence.
     

2. Understanding Tikanga and Mātauranga Māori

  • Deepen your understanding of tikanga Māori, with a focus on local protocols and their application in school settings.

  • Explore local iwi narratives and pūrākau, and learn how to meaningfully incorporate them across curriculum areas.

  • Begin applying key concepts from mātauranga Māori such as whakapapa, atua, and the maramataka (seasonal calendar).

  • Reflect critically on how personal and school practices align with te ao Māori values and principles.
     

 

3. Incorporating Te Reo Māori into the Curriculum and Classroom

  • Confidently embed te reo Māori across curriculum areas and in everyday classroom interactions.

  • Integrate tikanga Māori into classroom routines and school-wide activities with intention and care.

  • Use the maramataka to inform planning, classroom themes, and reflection practices.

  • Understand the principles of cross-curricular design to intentionally embed te reo and tikanga Māori across multiple subject areas.
     

4. Resource Development

  • Design intermediate-level classroom resources and visuals that reflect both te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori.

  • Develop teaching materials that align with curriculum goals while supporting reo Māori integration.

  • Begin collaborating with colleagues or local experts to co-design resources that reflect regional identity and language use.

  • Our course is delivered by a team of highly experienced kaiako reo Māori, who bring expertise from both senior leadership roles and classroom teaching.

  • Each session runs for 1.5 hours per week, with flexible options to choose the day that suits you best.

  • If you’re unable to attend your regular session, you’re welcome to join another stream.

  • All sessions are recorded and uploaded to our course portal immediately after class, allowing you to catch up at your convenience.

Self-Directed Modules

We also offer a Level 2 Self-Directed option for this course. Through this mode, you’ll receive weekly resources, tasks, interactive activities, and learning opportunities to complete at your own pace. The workload is approximately 1.5 hours per week over 10 weeks.

You’ll also have access to live tutorials to refine your learning and discuss key concepts, as well as an online learning community where you can connect with others in the course if you’d like additional support.
