Year 9 Te Reo Māori
Tōku Tuakiritanga
This junior resources align to Levels 1-2 of the New Zealand Curriculum guidelines. The resources are designed to build foundational language skills and cultural understanding through scaffolded, task-based lessons. Two units available - year 7/8 & year 9 programmes.​
 
What students will learn and achieve​:
Pronunciation and vocabulary
  • Correctly pronounce te reo Māori words and phrases, including common karakia (prayers).
  • Develop a rich vocabulary through guided activities, including word lists and interactive games

Sentence structure and grammar
  • Construct basic te reo Māori sentences using learned vocabulary and grammatical patterns.
  • Understand and apply sentence structures such as affirmative, negative, and question forms in speaking and writing.

Cultural knowledge
  • Learn the significance and purpose of karakia, and practice delivering them with confidence.
  • Explore Māori concepts such as Ngā Kete o te Wānanga and how they relate to te ao Māori (the Māori worldview).

Interactive and reflective skills
  • Record and reflect on learning progress using digital tools like Flipgrid.
  • Participate in class discussions and peer feedback sessions to strengthen understanding and communication skills.

  • Demonstrate knowledge through formative tasks like vocabulary recall and sentence construction.
  • Complete summative assessments, including written reflections, oral delivery of karakia, and collaborative projects.

This unit encourages reflection on past learning to build confidence in te reo Māori for the future. Students will expand their language skills by discussing a wider range of topics, using descriptive and figurative language, and refining their grammar. They will learn to communicate about events, travel, plans, and invitations across past, present, and future contexts.

 

What students will learn and achieve:

  • Communicate about events in the past, present, and future using a variety of tenses and descriptive language.

  • Enhance communication by incorporating figurative language to add detail and richness.

  • Develop a deeper understanding of grammatical sentence structures by applying more intermediate/ advanced grammar and exploring a wider range of grammatical functions.

Through role-playing scenarios and collaborative tasks, students will learn to communicate effectively in te reo Māori, using basic sentence structures in an enjoyable and meaningful context.

​Kaiako can transform their classroom into a real-life Ice Cream Shop, where students will place, prepare, and receive their orders entirely in te reo Māori. This immersive activity not only reinforces their learning but creates a memorable experience that your students will love.

Extraordinary People

This unit is designed to captivate students by using te reo Māori as a medium for self-expression and creativity, empowering them to describe themselves and important people in their lives. Through the exploration of descriptive language, students will learn to communicate about physical characteristics, personality traits, and emotions, while also discussing likes, dislikes, and origins in te reo Māori.

Students will build their confidence by weaving descriptive vocabulary, personal pronouns, and colloquialisms into engaging activities. The unit culminates in an exciting task where students will create a unique superhero character, showcasing their language skills through imaginative storytelling. This final project not only reinforces their learning but also provides an opportunity to apply te reo Māori in a fun, meaningful, and personalised context.

The end task challenges students to design and present their superhero character, incorporating the descriptive language and sentence structures they have mastered throughout the unit. By connecting the learning to their own lives and creative expressions, students will develop a strong foundation in te reo Māori while celebrating their individuality and the significance of others.​​​

What sets this unit apart is its strong emphasis on practical application—perfectly designed to complement experiences such as visiting a local takeaway shop or ordering through Uber Eats. By putting their learning into action, students will order their kai in te reo Māori, creating memorable, interactive moments that bridge classroom learning with everyday life.

In addition to ordering food, students will hone their conversational skills by practicing how to naturally express their likes, dislikes, and desires. By combining practical language use with real-world scenarios, this unit makes learning te reo Māori not only highly relevant but also deeply enjoyable and rewarding, fostering a lasting connection to the language and its cultural context.
