Within each unit is a huge array of interactive tasks and activities that align to a programme of learning with specific learning intentions. You will have access to everything you would need to teach 30+ lessons.

Junior te reo Māori units

Year 9 te reo Māori
Tōku tuakiritanga
This junior resources align to Levels 1-2 of the New Zealand Curriculum guidelines. The resources are designed to build foundational language skills and cultural understanding through scaffolded, task-based lessons. Two units available - year 7/8 & year 9 programmes.
 
What students will learn and achieve
Pronunciation and vocabulary
  • Correctly pronounce te reo Māori words and phrases, including common karakia (prayers).
  • Develop a rich vocabulary through guided activities, including word lists and interactive games
Sentence structure and grammar
  • Construct basic te reo Māori sentences using learned vocabulary and grammatical patterns.
  • Understand and apply sentence structures such as affirmative, negative, and question forms in speaking and writing.
Cultural knowledge
  • Learn the significance and purpose of karakia, and practice delivering them with confidence.
  • Explore Māori concepts such as Ngā Kete o te Wānanga and how they relate to te ao Māori (the Māori worldview).
Interactive and reflective skills
  • Record and reflect on learning progress using digital tools like Flipgrid.
  • Participate in class discussions and peer feedback sessions to strengthen understanding and communication skills.
Assessments and real-world application

This unit encourages reflection on past learning to build confidence in te reo Māori for the future. Students will expand their language skills by discussing a wider range of topics, using descriptive and figurative language, and refining their grammar. They will learn to communicate about events, travel, plans, and invitations across past, present, and future contexts.

  • Communicate about events in the past, present, and future using a variety of tenses and descriptive language.

  • Enhance communication by incorporating figurative language to add detail and richness.

Senior te reo Māori units

Level 1 te reo Māori 
NZC level 5-6 - wana ake!
In this unit, students will expand on their prior te reo Māori learning to broaden their kete kōrero, enabling them to discuss a range of events and situations. They will develop proficiency in using advanced sentence structures, enhancing their descriptive abilities with a focus on whakawhiti kōrero and forming and responding to questions. By the end of the unit, students will confidently discuss various events and express their feelings about their immediate world.
 
What students will learn and achieve
  • Expand functional te reo Māori Skills: Students will deepen their knowledge of te reo Māori by engaging in diverse formal and informal contexts, adapting their language to communicate effectively in various situations.
  • Build conversational confidence: Students will develop fluency and competence in meaningful conversations through regular practice, gaining confidence to express ideas and share information.
  • Refine questioning and responding: Students will enhance their ability to ask and answer questions, seek meaning, and interpret context, actively engaging with familiar themes in te reo Māori.

NZC level 6 - 7 - ōku wawata
This unit advances students’ te reo Māori proficiency by building on existing skills. It integrates advanced grammar, vocabulary expansion, and oral and written communication, alongside cultural themes like manaakitanga and tangata whenuatanga. Students will learn to discuss their goals and aspirations for the future while exploring formal and informal contexts, using whakataukī and kīwaha authentically. Through immersive activities, they develop linguistic and cultural confidence for real-world use and assessments.
 
What Students Will Learn and Achieve
  • Develop Advanced Language Skills: Master complex sentence structures, expand vocabulary, and incorporate whakataukī and kīwaha.
  • Enhance Communication: Build confidence in oral and written te reo Māori for formal, informal, and future-focused contexts.

Level 3 Te Reo Māori 
NZC level 7-8 - Te whakarauoratanga o te reo
This unit develops students' understanding of the history and status of te reo Māori, focusing on factors affecting its vitality and key events in its revival. Students will explore cause and effect, applying their knowledge to create solution-based language revitalisation strategies. They will build on conversational skills, using formal reo Māori conventions, advanced features like kupu whakarite and whakataukī, and demonstrating tikanga and Māori values in context.
 
What students will learn and achieve
  • Understand the history, significance, and revitalisation efforts of te reo Māori.
  • Develop the ability to argue, persuade, and inform using advanced language features such as kupu whakarite and whakataukī.
  • Communicate about future plans, recount events, and express complex ideas for varied audiences

Commonly asked questions

Do these lessons align with the new NCEA standards?

The sample assessments within these units are aligned with the current NCEA standards. As the changes for Levels 2 and 3 are on hold until 2028, these lessons still contribute to the overall development of ākonga.

Is there an ongoing fee?

No, this is a one-off fee paid by the kura. As long as they remain within the same school community, there are no additional fees associated with these resources.

Do you offer payment plans?

Currently, we don't offer payment plans, but feel free to email us to discuss your options.

Can I share these resources?

No, these resources are licensed to one kura only. Sharing them with other kura will result in your access being removed and/or the additional kura being charged.

What systems are these resources compatible with?

These resources are delivered via Google Drive but can be easily integrated into Microsoft systems as well. They can be accessed on any operating system.

Can these resources be used throughout the year?

Yes, there are plenty of activities that can be spread across multiple units or terms. All the information is clearly outlined, making it adaptable for different year levels and lessons.

Can these resources be used by multiple kaiako?

Yes, they can be used by multiple kaiako as long as it is within the same kura.
