"Ko te pae tawhiti whāia kia tata, ko te pae tata whakamaua kia tina"

"Seek out the distant horizons so they become near, and hold fast to those that are already attained"

Te Pae Tawhiti is a future-focused te reo Māori unit that supports ākonga to think critically about their goals, aspirations, and pathways using language with increasing depth and flexibility. Ākonga develop the reo needed to talk about plans, hopes, challenges, and solutions, while offering advice, encouragement, and reasoned ideas in both familiar and more formal contexts. Learning is grounded in mātauranga Māori and values such as manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, supporting reflection on identity, wellbeing, and collective responsibility.

Through purposeful kōrero and scaffolded language use, ākonga strengthen confidence and maturity in communication, preparing them to engage thoughtfully with future learning and life beyond the classroom.

Whāinga Paeatae | Achievement Objectives

This unit aligns with NZC Achievement Objectives for NCEA Level 2 (Levels 6–7, Te Puāwaitanga) by supporting ākonga to communicate with increasing confidence and flexibility across familiar, less familiar, and formal te reo Māori contexts.

Throughout this unit, ākonga will achieve the following objectives:

LEVEL 6

  • 6.2 communicate about problems and solutions

  • 6.3 communicate about immediate plans, hopes, wishes and intentions

  • 6.4 communicate in formal situations.

LEVEL 7

  1. 7.1 communicate about future plans

  2. 7.2 offer and respond to advice, warnings and suggestions

  3. 7.4 offer and respond to information and opinions, giving reasons

Putanga Ako | Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, ākonga will be able to:

  • Use te reo Māori to explore future pathways, aspirations, and different understandings of success

  • Kōrero with growing confidence and purpose in both familiar and more formal contexts

  • Reflect on identity, strengths, and support systems, linking language to wellbeing and belonging

  • Support others through encouragement, advice, and respectful kōrero grounded in manaakitanga

  • Discuss challenges and explore solutions using problem-solving and resilience strategies

  • Apply tikanga Māori values such as whanaungatanga and tangata whenuatanga in learning spaces

  • Develop understanding of mātauranga Māori and how Māori perspectives guide decision-making

  • Recognise progress, celebrate achievement, and continue setting purposeful learning goals

Aromatawai | Assessments

This unit supports ākonga to meet half of the NCEA Level 2 portfolio requirements through a balanced set of listening, speaking, and writing contexts grounded in te ao torotoro.

  • AS91288 | WAIHANGA TUHINGA AUAHA, I TE REO TE AO TOROTORO: Ākonga write a formal letter in te reo Māori proposing a school-based improvement, using clear structure, appropriate tone, and reasoned arguments to communicate ideas respectfully.

  • AS91285 | KŌRERO KIA WHAKAMAHI I TE REO O TE AO TOROTORO: Ākonga prepare and deliver a persuasive speech in te reo Māori that reflects on identity, achievement, and future pathways, communicating aspirations with confidence and purpose.

  • AS91284 | WHAKARONGO KIA MŌHIO KI TE REO O TE AO TOROTORO: Ākonga listen to a spoken te reo Māori text about future aspirations and demonstrate understanding by identifying key ideas, perspectives, and meaning from the discussion.

Across the unit, ākonga engage with future-focused kaupapa that require them to communicate ideas, perspectives, and aspirations with clarity and purpose. They demonstrate the ability to understand spoken reo Māori, express and justify opinions, and communicate effectively for more formal audiences. Contexts are authentic, relevant to ākonga experience, and designed to support progression toward Merit and Excellence while maintaining confidence and cultural integrity.

Ākonga complete one portfolio piece for each standard to achieve the three NCEA Level 2 internal standards. Additional evidence can be generated through other class kaupapa or completed using an additional Poutawa Level 2 unit package.
