PUTANGA AKO Learning Outcomes

Kia Hihiri te Reo – Language in Motion empowers senior ākonga to communicate with growing independence and authenticity in te reo Māori. Designed for NCEA Level 1 learners, this unit shifts beyond supported exchanges into more sustained, purposeful kōrero grounded inte ao o te rangatahi, identity, and lived experience.

Through themes such as hobbies, routines, opinions, feelings, and future intentions, ākonga strengthen their ability to discuss past events, express present states, give instructions, and communicate immediate plans using increasingly spontaneous language patterns.

Learning moves beyond memorised dialogue toward flexible interaction, where students respond, clarify, extend ideas, and uphold tikanga within conversational spaces.

WHAKAPŪMAUTANGA Assessments

This unit includes two internally assessed NCEA Level 1 Achievement Standards (AS92092 and AS92093). Ākonga demonstrate their ability to interact in spoken Māori and communicate ideas, information, and opinions within meaningful, contemporary contexts.

Assessment focuses on sustained communication, organisation of ideas, and growing independence in reo use. Across both tasks, learners are expected to:

  • participate in authentic spoken interaction

  • communicate ideas clearly and coherently

  • refer to past and present experiences

  • use familiar language patterns accurately enough to ensure meaning

HE ORANGA HIHIRI PODCAST

Te Reo Māori 1.1 – AS92092 (5 Credits)

Ākonga take part in two recorded, podcast-style spoken interactions. They contribute 2–3 minutes of individual kōrero, referring naturally to past and present experiences while:

  • asking and answering questions

  • responding to others’ ideas

  • adding simple detail, reasons, or feelings

The focus is on authentic interaction, confidence, and clear communication rather than perfect accuracy.

HE REO KUA RANGONA, HE REO KUA ORA

Te Reo Māori 1.2 – AS92093 (5 Credits)

Ākonga create a presentation or composition about how te reo Māori is used in contemporary media. They select a relevant example (e.g. music, film, social media, podcast) and explain how it supports language vitality, including personal reflection and whakaaro.

Evidence must be equivalent to:

  • 200–250 words written, or

  • 1–1.5 minutes spoken, or

  • a complementary combination of both

This task assesses organisation of ideas, clarity of expression, and meaningful engagement with language vitality.

Judgements are made holistically in line with NZQA guidance, with emphasis on effectiveness, relevance, and clarity of communication.
