Mā pango, mā whero, ka oti ai te mahi.
Taku Manutaki, Taku Manukura – Voices of Leadership invites senior ākonga to explore leadership as a balance of responsibility, service, and collective strength through the use of increasingly purposeful te reo Māori. Designed for NCEA Level 2 learners, this unit centres on leadership as both action and influence, grounded in the whakataukī “Mā pango, mā whero, ka oti ai te mahi.”
Through themes such as leadership, values, identity, and community impact, ākonga strengthen their ability to express opinions, share ideas, and communicate aspirations using flexible and meaningful language across a range of contexts.
Learning moves beyond simple description into more deliberate and reflective kōrerorero, where students justify perspectives, respond to others, and communicate with clarity in both formal and informal settings. As fluency develops, ākonga recognise that leadership is grounded in tikanga Māori values, empowering them to lead with integrity, uplift others, and contribute positively to their communities.

Achievement Objectives
By the end of Level 7, ākonga can communicate with confidence in familiar and some less familiar te reo Māori contexts, sharing ideas, plans, and opinions with increasing fluency.

Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes describe what ākonga will be able to demonstrate by the end of the unit. They focus on communicative competence, cultural participation, confidence, and relational growth, ensuring learning extends beyond language recall to meaningful application.
By the end of this unit, ākonga will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
Use te reo Māori to describe leadership qualities and experiences
Express opinions about leadership and community impact
Communicate aspirations and intentions with clarity
Engage in formal and informal kōrero about leadership
Justify ideas and respond thoughtfully to others
Apply tikanga Māori values such as rangatiratanga and manaakitanga
Reflect on personal leadership potential and responsibility

Assessments
This unit supports ākonga to meet NCEA Level 2 portfolio requirements through a balanced set of listening, speaking, and writing contexts grounded in leadership, identity, and community.
Across the unit, ākonga engage with kaupapa that require them to analyse leadership, express opinions, and communicate ideas with confidence. They develop the ability to understand spoken reo Māori, present arguments in formal contexts, and respond thoughtfully to different perspectives.
Contexts are authentic and grounded in te ao Māori, supporting progression toward Merit and Excellence while maintaining cultural integrity.
Ākonga complete one portfolio piece for each standard to achieve the three NCEA Level 2 internal standards. Additional evidence can be generated through other class kaupapa or completed using an additional Poutawa Level 2 unit package.

AS91285 | KŌRERO KIA WHAKAMAHI I TE REO O TE AO TOROTORO: Ākonga prepare and deliver a formal speech in te reo Māori presenting themselves as a leadership candidate, communicating aspirations, values, and ideas with clarity and purpose.
AS91284 | WHAKARONGO KIA MŌHIO KI TE REO O TE AO TOROTORO: Ākonga listen to spoken te reo Māori texts about leadership and demonstrate understanding by identifying key ideas, perspectives, and viewpoints.
