Ko te reo te mauri o te mana māori.
Kia Hihiri te Reo – Language in Motion empowers senior ākonga to communicate with growing independence and authenticity in te reo Māori. Designed for NCEA Level 1 learners, this unit shifts beyond supported exchanges into more sustained, purposeful kōrero grounded inte ao o te rangatahi, identity, and lived experience.
Through themes such as hobbies, routines, opinions, feelings, and future intentions, ākonga strengthen their ability to discuss past events, express present states, give instructions, and communicate immediate plans using increasingly spontaneous language patterns.
Learning moves beyond memorised dialogue toward flexible interaction, where students respond, clarify, extend ideas, and uphold tikanga within conversational spaces.

Assessments
This unit includes two internally assessed NCEA Level 1 Achievement Standards (AS92092 and AS92093). Ākonga demonstrate their ability to interact in spoken Māori and communicate ideas, information, and opinions within meaningful, contemporary contexts.
Assessment focuses on sustained communication, organisation of ideas, and growing independence in reo use. Across both tasks, learners are expected to:
participate in authentic spoken interaction
communicate ideas clearly and coherently
refer to past and present experiences
use familiar language patterns accurately enough to ensure meaning
AS92092 | TE KŌRERORERO I NGĀ PĀRONGO, I NGĀ ARIĀ ME NGĀ WHAKAARO
Ngā Runaruna – Hobbies and Interests
In this assessment, ākonga will take part in an authentic, unrehearsed interaction in spoken te reo Māori with a partner or small group. They will share and respond to information, ideas, and opinions about a hobby or activity they enjoy.
Ākonga will describe the activity, explain its significance, and refer to past, present, or future experiences. Through this kōrerorero, they demonstrate their ability to sustain conversation, respond to others, and communicate effectively using familiar language in meaningful contexts.
AS92093 | TE WHAKAPUAKI WHAKAARO E PĀ ANA KI TĒTAHI HOROPAKI E ORA NEI TE REO
Ko te reo kia rere - Language and the Media
In this assessment, ākonga will present one piece of work in te reo Māori that communicates ideas and opinions about the use of te reo Māori in modern media as a language vitality context.
Students may present their work in spoken, written, or combined forms. They will explore a contemporary example and reflect on how it supports the visibility and use of te reo Māori.
Through this task, ākonga demonstrate their ability to communicate ideas clearly, link information, and express whakaaro about te reo Māori as a living and evolving language.
