Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata; ko te pae tata, whakamaua kia tina.

E Pao, Tōrea – Māori Business and Innovation invites senior ākonga to explore entrepreneurship, creativity, and leadership through the lens of te ao Māori. Designed for NCEA Level 2 learners, this unit centres on innovation as a balance between ambition and responsibility, grounded in the whakataukī “Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei.”

Through themes such as enterprise, leadership, problem-solving, and innovation, ākonga strengthen their ability to communicate ideas, express opinions, and propose solutions using increasingly flexible and purposeful language across a range of contexts.

Learning moves beyond supported language into more strategic and persuasive kōrero, where students justify ideas, respond to feedback, and present concepts with clarity and confidence. As fluency develops, ākonga recognise that innovation is most powerful when grounded in tikanga Māori values such as manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, and whanaungatanga, using te reo Māori as a tool to lead, create, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and future pathways.

Assessments

This unit supports ākonga to meet NCEA Level 2 portfolio requirements through a balanced set of listening, speaking, and writing contexts grounded in Māori business and innovation.

Across the unit, ākonga engage with kaupapa that require them to analyse ideas, communicate solutions, and express opinions with increasing confidence. They develop the ability to understand spoken reo Māori, present persuasive arguments, and communicate effectively in more formal contexts.

Contexts are authentic, relevant to ākonga experience, and designed to support progression toward Merit and Excellence while maintaining cultural integrity.

Ākonga complete one portfolio piece for each standard to achieve the three NCEA Level 2 internal standards. Additional evidence can be generated through other class kaupapa or completed using an additional Poutawa Level 2 unit package.
