The “Te Ara o Taikehu: Understanding mātauranga Māori to inform the English curriculum (NZC) and Mana Ōrite” wānanga is a unique opportunity to bring English subject specialists together for a 2-day immersive wānanga to understand and authentically implement mātauranga Māori into your curriculum design.
This is in preparation for the for the “Mana ōrite mō te mātauranga Māori” as part of the NCEA upcoming change package for 2022.
“It is fundamental that there is parity for mātauranga Māori within NCEA, and it has equal value as other bodies of knowledge” NCEA Change 2.

Throughout this wānanga, participants will be introduced to the deeper understanding of mātauranga Māori and how it permeates throughout Aotearoa, and it's relevance within the New Zealand Curriculum.
Expert facilitators have been brought together to walk you through this understanding so that you can develop your own cultural competency in order to enhance the English curriculum in your own learning area and educational space in an engaging and authentic way. This is in alignment with the NCEA changes that will be implemented in 2022.
The second part of our wānanga, is an opportunity to discuss potential themes, ideas and assessment tasks that support mātauranga māori within the Level 1 English standards. Through collectivism and collaboration teachers will have a clear understanding of the expectations and requirements to adequately support the NCEA Level 1 changes next year.
The specific outcomes of this workshop are.
How to integrate te ao Māori and mātauranga Māori into the outcome statements as part of the new ‘graduate profile’ for NCEA and in the design of achievement standards.
How to ensure equal support for ākonga Māori in all settings and equal status for mātauranga Māori.
To develop more standards to make sure that mātauranga Māori is acknowledged and credentialed equally by NCEA
To develop new assessment resources and teaching and learning guides for mātauranga Māori.
How to have Māori-centered contexts for examples and assessment resources e.g. local iwi history.
To provide inclusive standards and assessment resources that allow for diverse cultural perspectives on what’s important e.g. considering community or hapū impact, not just individual user needs.
To build teacher capability around culturally inclusive NCEA and assessment and aromatawai practice that is respectful to mātauranga Māori.
Funding is available from the PPTA Subject Association Grant fund up to the value of $700
