“E RERE TE HUATA, KAPOHIA!”

“When the spear flies, grab it.”

Whakangahautia Te Reo – Ignite the Language invites ākonga to celebrate and bring te reo Māori to life through creativity, expression, and performance. Designed for learners transitioning toward more flexible communication, this kaupapa strengthens confidence while extending familiar language patterns into everyday teenage contexts.

Through voice, movement, rhythm, and expressive kōrero, ākonga learn to communicate about recent events, future plans, school life, and social interactions with growing spontaneity. Language becomes something to enjoy and share, not simply rehearse.

Creative tasks, collaborative performances, and real-life scenarios support fluency development while reinforcing cultural integrity and respectful participation.

This unit empowers learners to seize opportunities to kōrero, build pride in their reo journey, and experience te reo Māori as a living language of energy, identity, and connection in Aotearoa.

WHAKAPŪMAUTANGA Assessments

This unit includes a feature-style recorded presentation assessment designed to be engaging, achievable, and confidence-building. Learning is scaffolded to ensure ākonga absorb language meaningfully before producing it through expressive tasks.

Aligned with NZC Levels 3–4 and the Pou Reo framework — Kia Tika, Kia Rere, Kia Māori, and Kia Ora te Reo — assessment prioritises clarity, fluency, cultural integrity, and learner wellbeing. The focus is on authentic communication rather than technical perfection, encouraging courageous and enthusiastic reo use.

Performance-Based Presentation Task

Ākonga create and deliver a short recorded or live presentation that draws on familiar language structures extended into expressive contexts.

Learners communicate about events, plans, routines, or social situations using past, present, and future markers. They demonstrate confidence through voice, delivery, and natural flow, highlighting growth in fluency and spontaneity.

Comprehension & Applied Language Tasks

Structured listening and reading tasks reinforce understanding of new vocabulary, tense markers, linking words, and descriptive language.

Ākonga respond to spoken instructions, interpret contextual meaning, and apply language patterns in short written responses, strengthening flexibility and independence across multiple language modes.
