The Living, Breathing Language

A foundational te reo Māori programme supporting health professionals to build confidence, strengthen cultural capability, and integrate reo into everyday workplace practice.

Te Reo Mataora is a foundational te reo Māori programme designed for professionals within the Ministry of Health who are beginning their reo journey. 

Grounded in the philosophy of te reo Māori as a living, breathing source of wellbeing, the programme supports participants to build confidence in communication, strengthen cultural understanding, and deepen their connection to Aotearoa. 

Through a structured 10-week journey, learners engage in practical, everyday language use alongside key elements of tikanga, mātauranga Māori, and values-based practice, with a strong focus on interpersonal communication and workplace application.

Duration

10 weeks – 4 cohorts per year

Delivery Mode

Online (1.5 hours per week) with two full-day face-to-face wānanga

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop confident and culturally respectful pronunciation

  • Use foundational sentence structures in everyday and workplace contexts

  • Apply te reo Māori in simple, practical communication

  • Understand and demonstrate key Māori values such as manaakitanga and whanaungatanga

  • Deliver a basic mihi and use karakia appropriately

  • Engage with tikanga Māori processes such as pōwhiri and whakatau

  • Begin to integrate te reo Māori into professional environments to support wellbeing and connection

  • Build sustainable language-learning habits and pathways for continued growth
