A foundational te reo Māori programme supporting health professionals to build confidence, strengthen cultural capability, and integrate reo into everyday workplace practice.
Te Reo Mataora is a foundational te reo Māori programme designed for professionals within the Ministry of Health who are beginning their reo journey.
Grounded in the philosophy of te reo Māori as a living, breathing source of wellbeing, the programme supports participants to build confidence in communication, strengthen cultural understanding, and deepen their connection to Aotearoa.
Through a structured 10-week journey, learners engage in practical, everyday language use alongside key elements of tikanga, mātauranga Māori, and values-based practice, with a strong focus on interpersonal communication and workplace application.

10 weeks – 4 cohorts per year
Delivery Mode
Online (1.5 hours per week) with two full-day face-to-face wānanga
Learning Outcomes
Develop confident and culturally respectful pronunciation
Use foundational sentence structures in everyday and workplace contexts
Apply te reo Māori in simple, practical communication
Understand and demonstrate key Māori values such as manaakitanga and whanaungatanga
Deliver a basic mihi and use karakia appropriately
Engage with tikanga Māori processes such as pōwhiri and whakatau
Begin to integrate te reo Māori into professional environments to support wellbeing and connection
Build sustainable language-learning habits and pathways for continued growth
